The WHO Resolution on Sepsis, which was adopted by the World Health Assembly and the World Health Organization in May 2017, is now available in Spanish, French, Russian, Chinese, and Arabic.

The resolution marks a quantum leap in the fight against sepsis and urges the 194 United Nation Member States to implement appropriate measures to reduce the human and health economic burden of sepsis. The resolution, to improve, prevent, diagnose, and manage sepsis, was spearheaded by the Global Sepsis Alliance, proposed by the German Ministry of Health, and supported by Australia, Austria, Colombia, Costa Rica, Estonia, Ireland, Jamaica, Luxemburg, the Russian Federation, and Switzerland. After Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, we have now arrived at Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday was established in 2012 and is a global day of giving, fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. It encourages people to give back at the beginning of the christmas season, as well as to serve as a response to the commercialization and consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Here is how we use the money raised:

On February 15th and 16th 2018, the 23rd International Symposium on Infections in the Critically Ill Patient will be held in Dublin, Ireland. This year, the conference will be conducted with The Intensive Care Society of Ireland as part of the winter symposium. Trainees will present their most recent studies in critical care medicine and postoperative medicine. We're expecting a major turn out of clinicians from both the Republic of Ireland as well as Northern Ireland. Join us and over 35 speakers from all fields of medicine who review current concepts, technologies, and present advances in infections in critically ill patient.
Sepsis, pulmonary infections, basic research, treatment of pulmonary infections, and prophylaxis therapy of severe infections will be the topics of the main sessions. At the end of each session, a clinical controversy, panel discussion or case report discussion will give you the option to interact with these leading experts in the field of infections.

On October 20th, 2017, representatives from the African Sepsis Alliance, the Global Sepsis Alliance, the African Federation of Critical Care Nurses, and the World Federation of Critical Care Nurses came together in Kampala, Uganda, to formulate demands and steps necessary to fight the global silent killer sepsis in Africa. This led to the creation of the Kampala Declaration.

Sepsis Unplugged is a conference done a little differently. It leaves attitudes and egos at the door, brings together all healthcare professionals and patient groups as equals, and asks the questions that will shape better sepsis care.

Conferences like this are crucial: we must act decisively to save the thousands of lives sepsis claims every year – more than breast cancer, bowel cancer, prostate cancer and HIV/AIDS combined.

In the last week of October, Governor Cuomo of New York State signed a new education law into effect, ensuring that all children in New York State learn about sepsis in school.
This marks a huge step, as early recognition and awareness are essential in the global fight against sepsis and educating school children about the signs of sepsis will spread awareness and save lives. We hope this motivates other states and countries to follow this shining example from New York State.

Bill No. A06053A, also known as “Rory Staunton’s Law”, “...directs the commissioner of education to collaborate with the department of health and other health organizations to establish regulations for a sepsis awareness and prevention program for school districts, boards of cooperative educational services, and nonpublic schools.”

The Rory Staunton Foundation, which worked closely with Governor Cuomo's office to make this happen, was established after the tragic death of Rory Staunton, a young and healthy boy who died from sepsis in April 2012. His parents mission is to ensure that no other child or young adult dies of sepsis resulting from the lack of a speedy diagnosis and immediate medical treatment. The Rory Staunton Foundation also published a very interesting and informative short video on sepsis (embedded below), to help raise awareness for sepsis.
